Setting Personal Goals for a Personal Project

What are my personal goals building People Calendar?

I think it helps to make these explicit, so that I’m not demotivated if “become a billionaire through a succesful exit before 40” doesn’t seem to be happening.

Here they are for me, in decreasing order of importance;

1: Have fun building

I like building stuff, always have. So a project like this is fun. Fun is important.

2: Solve Problem for Myself

I love meeting up with friends, both close and distant. But it’s not always easy to plan all this. If only there was some way to reduce eternal “we should do this more often vibes.”

Hence, well, this app! If it improved things only for myself, and only a little, it’s already been a good way to spend my time.

3: keep sharp and learning technically

After about a decade spent in fairly, well, specific and pretty old-school web dev techs and stacks (LAMP basically for web, and Salesforce / CRM work)… Where has the world gone?

How often does one really setup and end to end hosting, code versioning, ci/cd pipeline etc etc from scratch?

The new ‘defaults’ in many ways have become things like typescript, javascript, node, react. Nice to learn and brush up on these a bit again, or stay sharp for the parts of this world I haven’t used professionally in a while!

Note that in that regards this project is fairly ambitious with the mobile focus and administering cloud hosting (esp GCP) from scratch etc etc… Are all fairly new to me. That’s ok, see point #1!

4: have fun building a business/project

Including things like a ‘company’ website, getting payments, driving traffic and users etc etc.

5: side income

Can I make non zero recurring revenue out of this? Would be neat! And strangers giving you money is always a good way of ‘putting it to the test’. So definitely a goal as well, a bit the ‘north star’ giving direction if you will.
