Instant Gent

What it is

Instant Gent is a vibe-coded 3D game, virtual tour and playful simulation of Ghent for the browser, iPhone and iPad. Wander through the streets, discover the landmarks and experience the city at your own pace, or turn it into a game with races and quests. The browser version loads in seconds, no install, and drops you in the real city centre, built from OpenStreetMap data: the Sint-Baafskathedraal, the Belfort, the Sint-Niklaaskerk, the Korenmarkt and the streets in between. You get around by bike, on foot or on horseback.

It's now also a mobile app, listed as Instant Ghent on the App Store. Explore, race, take a flying tour over the city or tackle quests on iPhone and iPad—even offline. The app is free, with no ads or account required.

In the browser, play solo, or two players share one keyboard in split-screen, side by side like in the old Mario Kart days, each with their own view, place, lap timer and item slots and a shared mini-map in the middle. The game speaks Dutch, English, French and Spanish.

Explore, race or go on a quest

Explore mode lets you roam the city freely, with street names popping up as you go. In Race mode you ride laps around a real route, like Gent Centrum along the Belfort and the cathedral, or Brugse Poort, with or without weapons: a bunny that chases whoever is ahead of you, a hedgehog you drop behind you and a rain cloud that soaks the leader.

The Quests are short timed missions with a Ghent twist: catch the thief who stole the Lam Gods (the Ghent Altarpiece) from the cathedral, again, catch the last boat, make the train to Bruges, or get through the night while dodging puking students, the "kotszombies".

How it's made

Plain JavaScript on top of Three.js, no game engine. Streets, buildings and landmarks are generated from OpenStreetMap data, everything else (riders, horses, bikes, cars, passers-by) is low-poly geometry built in code.
